about

Oof this is another song about complicated relationships and getting free of them, not in a way that’s bitter, but it’s very honest about where things went wrong. This is a song where a friend has left you high and dry, proven to be a hypocrite and a liar, in only the ways a narcissist can, with gaslighting and manipulation--they always believe their own lies-- and the narrator having enough distance from it to see it for what it all really was at last. She’s grieving what she thought was a close friendship and it turned out to be onesided. The second they found something new and shiny, they were out. The friendship no longer served them, so they drop you. I think most of us have experienced this at some point in our lives. If you haven’t you’re lucky! The production is pretty classic 80s rock, some of the sounds are very Ryan Adams. Which is kind of funny since it’s a song about being friends with a narcissist.

lyrics

Oh the river's frozen over
My heart stings like a fire now
Hands cold and under cover
You chased the fox again down
Coward taking away
The honest line of lovin' ways
Stranger changing your face
Left the truth behind ya throwin' shade
And we're crashing down

You didn't think twice
Told me pretty lies
Yeah you fooled your own heart into thinking you're right
Leaving me low
In fire and cold
Scared to find your demons on that nightmare road

Oh snow is falling softly
Hushing over footsteps in the field
You found your shiny lover
And you're falling under water now
Brother coming away
From what our mother said to always hold
Friend I wish you could stay
I'm standing still with fire in my veins

We came crashing down
Oh, with a hush to the ground

You didn't think twice
Told me pretty lies
Yeah you fooled your own heart into thinking you're right
Leaving me low
In fire and cold
Scared to find your demons on that lonesome road

Bridge:

You win some you lose some
When you keep running your mouth
Yeah you win some you lose some

You didn't think twice
Told me pretty lies
Yeah you fooled your own heart into thinking you're right
Leaving me low
In fire and cold (space)
